The creation of The Foundry was a reaction to
Ravensgate’s Vigilante Registration Law and the deaths of the original
Team Hyperion. It also was a logical end result of Joshua Caine’s
educational philosophy. Caine spent years identifying local meta-human
children and offering them scholarships to Collegium Caine, then educating
them in hopes that he could mold the next generation of superheroes. He
believed—-accurately so—-that the Vigilante Registration Law was really a
means toward controlling and/or neutralizing superheroes.
Although Caine had the ability to relocate, he couldn’t really let go of
the issues surrounding the Registration Law and his family tragedy—-and
neither could his young niece, Danielle Devereaux. He spent nine years
training Danielle and an elite cadre of his students, and even some of
those students had doubts about whether this was going to work. Two
students, Oscar Washington and Francois Champeaux, left the Collegium
rather than risk the futures of all involved.
In 2002, Caine decided his students were ready. He sent three—-Danielle,
Maximillian Morell and Jack Nash—-into the city to fight crime, and break
the law doing so. Their first encounter, breaking up an attempted bank
robbery by Samurai Seven, garnered national attention—and brought Oscar
and Francois back to the Manor. They could not stand on the sidelines
while their friends risked everything for principle—-and one family’s
revenge. Originally known as The Doe Family—-as in John Doe, Jane Doe—-the
young heroes defied a local legal establishment being manipulated by an
unknown criminal entity.
As they met each new threat, they gained new allies. When they exposed The
Somnambulist and foiled many of his plots, they turned public sympathy
against the Registration Law and, through Caine’s connections, gained
Federal sanction to get around the law.
Currently, The Foundry consists of seven heroes—-Frisson, Velocity,
Jeopardy (as of Issue #2), Pyro (as of #4), Tabula Rasa (as of #5),
Energon (as of Issue #9) and ‘Porter (as of Issue #14). Shadowstrike, an
original member of The Doe Family, left to attend college elsewhere after
Issue #24. The Foundry’s support team comprises Nevermore (Joshua Caine,
formerly The Frozen Ghost), Mechanic (Margaret Palomar) and Dollface (Kachina
Maverick).
Foundry VoxDot System
Maximillian Morell designed this communication device,
which utilizes technology from his native era. The VoxDot is the size of a
dime and adheres to the skin behind the ear. It uses the mastoid sinus
bone for acoustic resonance for both listening and sub-vocal speaking, and
it both draws power from the wearer’s own electromagnetic field and uses
it as an antenna. The outer shell of the device camouflages itself by
reacting to the amount of melanin in the wearer’s skin. It can be
activated and deactivated by pressing on its center.
VoxDots have a range of five miles in urban settings, 20-25 in rural or
away from intense electromagnetic fields. They require a central junction
interface, either on board the Mistrunner or at Collegium Caine, for
greater range. With a VoxDot Interface Box, a dot can bounce its signal
off satellites.
